In 1976 four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester, England went to see the Sex Pistols. They formed a band, Joy Division. Three years later it was a matter of art, life and death. Now thirty years later, they are enjoying a larger audience and more influence than ever before with a profound legacy that resonates fiercely in today's heavily careerist music industry and over-mediated pop culture.
Elemental. The quintessential English fellow, explorer, scientist, exotic dancer and some might say raving lunatic. Banned from 13 of the colonies for 'unspeakable scientific experiments', yet heralded as something of a deity in a great many more. Moog teamed up with Elemental after he was lured into his laboratory under the promise of laudanum. The laudanum never appeared. This video however, did. Joy Division was an English rock band that formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. With their dark, cavernous sound and use of synthesizers and electronics, they pioneered the post-punk sound of the late 1970s and the early 1980s. The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer, Ian Curtis. The remaining members reformed as New Order and went on to achieve much critical and commercial success.
A new video by Jonathan Beamish for the earliest recorded version of the song produced as a John Peel Session for the BBC in 1979. The original band footage is a mixture of a performance video shot by the band for the single release (minus the damaged shots) and live concert excerpts from Plank, Brussels and the Apollo, Manchester. . We needed to do some tricky retiming and editing to sync it up with the footage which is from completely different versions of the song. Odd to discover that much of the original performance video done for the single release wasn't edited properly with much of the shots of the band playing not cut accurately to the audio.
This is the first single from the Little Joy LP, released on Rough Trade and directed by Thunderbird.
