Songwriters-producers and record label owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff made Philadelphia the soul capitol in the 1970s. Gamble and Huffs label Philadelphia International had a stable of artists that included the OJays, McFadden & Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Lou Rawls and Dee Dee Sharp. Their records featured the duos trademark sound: lush string orchestrations, a powerful rhythm section and a disco beat. They also worked with Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, and Jerry Butler among others. In 1990, Gamble and Huff won a Grammy for best R&B song, awarded for Simply Reds cover of the Blue Notes 1972 hit If You Dont Know Me By Know. And in 1999, they won the Grammy Trustees Award. In March 1918, Germany launched a massive offensive on the Western Front - her last chance to win the war. The Russian Revolution had taken Russia out of the war, freeing up half a million German soldiers, Germany had to act before the Americans poured into Europe. The offensive was masterminded by the brilliant but unstable General Erich Ludendorff. Within the first few days the British 5th army was in retreat and Paris was being shelled. Some Allies feared defeat. But Germany faced a challenge on all fronts: her allies Ottoman Turkey and Austria-Hungary were both on the point of collapse and at home German civilians were losing their appetite for war. Dangerous pacifist ideas were carried back by troops returning from Russia. Then Ludendorff's great offensive ran out of steam. He had set no achievable objectives, nor were his armies adequately supplied. Starved and exhausted German soldiers slowed in their advance to loot and drink. Some of Ludendorff's colleagues feared for his sanity. Then his worst nightmare unfolded: American forces started arriving at the rate of 250,000 per month. The tables had turned against Germany.

Gamble made three trips to Miao Feng Shan (Marvelous Peak Mountain), a popular Daoist pilgrimage site. Dedicated to the worship of the Goddess Bi Xia Yun Jun (Princess of the Clouds Before Dawn), the temple was located on a hill about 25 miles northwest of Beijing. Most worshippers made the arduous three-day journey in the spring. Pilgrims went either in groups organized by guilds or temple societies, or on their own as individual penitents. Although the primary purpose of the journey was religious, Gamble's visual record illustrates that these pilgrimages also served a lively social function. Upon his return to America, Gamble edited the footage shot on one of his trips into a short 16mm documentary. We have re-edited his film slightly, retaining his original titles, and adding music. * * * * * * * * In 1989, Pilgrimage to Miao Feng Shan was re-edited and a film score of traditional music arranged by Tan Dun was added. The film accompanied the first exhibit of Sidney Gamble's photographs China between Revolutions: The Sidney D. Gamble Photographs 1917-1932.
