This legendary fight took place on September 14 1923, at the Polo Grounds in New York. After being knocked out the ring, Jack Dempsey struck back and dropped Firpo numerous times until the referee stopped the fight.

24 year old, 6'1", 180 lb challenger Dempsey vs 37 year old, 6'6½", 245 lb Heavyweight Champion Willard. July 4th, 1919, Toledo, Ohio. Round 1. Worst beating a champion ever took. Injuries: caved-in cheekbone, broken jaw, teeth knocked out, broken nose, broken ribs, lost hearing in 1 ear, eyes swollen shut, multiple contusions, cuts, and abrasions. Dempsey had scored 42 KO's prior to stopping Big Jess. Some feared for Dempsey's life as one of Willard's previous opponents, Bull Young, had died from injuries inflicted by Big Jess. Willard lasted through Rds 2 and 3, but couldn't continue after the third round. Fought in 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 43 degrees Celsius, earning nickname "Massacre in the Sun." Dempsey listed at 187½ lbs for Willard fight, but was actually 180. Fought at 192 lbs against Firpo a few years later. Average man stood 5'7" in 1919. 6'6½", 245 lb in 1919 truly was a Giant. Dempsey became more famous in the 1920's than baseball idol, Babe Ruth.

Sold-out crowd of 82 000 people with over 40 000 more being turned away at the gate. Dempsey's 5th title defense. Dempsey/Firpo is a fight for the ages and one of the truly legendary bouts in boxing history.

25 year old, 6'1", 188½ lb Heavyweight Champion Manassa Mauler Jack Dempsey vs 27 year old, 6'1", 197 lb challenger KO Bill Brennan. Dempsey's second defense. Dec 14, 1920. Sold out crowd of 17000 fans at Madison Square Garden (dwarfed by the over 80 000 fans Dempsey would draw in his next fight against Carpentier). Scheduled for 15 rds, Brennan lasted longer against Dempsey than any other man. In 1918, contender Dempsey KO'ed contender Brennan in 6 rds, but Brennan fought 30 more fights in 29 months earning a title shot. Brennan closed out his career in 1923 with 48 KO's and 102 fights. Brennan was murdered in 1924. Dempsey's manager, Doc Kearns, blamed the tough Brennan title defense on Dempsey violating the fighters' celibacy rule during training camp. Dempsey bled from the right ear throughout the fight. Brennan was ahead on points going into rd 12.

I am following a $5M one of a kind Ferrari P4/5 and former F1 World Champion Damon Hill is behind me in a ProDrive Aston Martin, I don't want to crash in front of 200,000 spectators with McDreamy by my side! Patrick Dempsey is a great guy and a real racer, I enjoyed getting to spend some time with him and giving him a ride in my 2-Eleven.
